Emergency tree service is not only for the tree already on the roof. Just as often it is for the tree that is clearly about to become a problem, the one giving every sign that it will not survive the next big storm. Catching those trees first is far better, and cheaper, than cleaning up after them. Here are three signs to act on.
Sign one: it is leaning like never before
A tree that suddenly leans, or leans more than it did, is a tree whose roots may be failing. Look at the base: soil that is cracked, heaved, or lifting on the side opposite the lean is a serious red flag that the root plate is giving way. A long-standing gentle lean the tree grew into is usually fine. A new lean after a storm or a wet spell is not, and it means keeping people and cars out from under the tree until it is assessed.
Sign two: it is clearly under the weather
A tree in steep, sudden decline is a tree losing its strength. Whole sections that fail to leaf out, bark sloughing off in sheets, large dead limbs appearing across the crown, and fungus at the base all say the tree is dying and getting more brittle by the season. A dying tree does not fail on a schedule you can predict, which is what makes a large one near the house an emergency in slow motion.
Sign three: it has grown top-heavy
Some trees, especially fast-growing ones, put on more crown than their trunk and roots can safely hold, particularly if they were topped or badly pruned in the past and responded with a dense flush of weak regrowth. A top-heavy tree with a lot of weight on weak, narrow branch unions is primed to lose a major limb, or split, in wind or ice. If a tree looks unbalanced and overloaded up top, it is worth a professional look before the weather tests it.
The right team for the job
A compromised tree is a hazardous thing to work on, because the damage that makes it dangerous also makes it unpredictable. A crew that does this every day reads where the weight and the stored tension are, rigs the pieces, and takes the tree down in control, and for the tall or tight jobs a crane lets us lift heavy sections cleanly away from the house.
